n8n vs Make.com for AI Automation in 2026: Which One Actually Fits Your Setup

We tested both platforms for AI automation workflows in 2026. Here's what we found: real pricing data, honest feature comparisons, and a clear recommendation based on who you are.

We run automation across everything we do: research pipelines, publishing queues, content distribution, and revenue tracking. So when we evaluated n8n and Make.com for AI automation work in 2026, we weren’t doing a theoretical comparison. We needed one of them to actually work for our setup.

Here’s what we found.

Both platforms are good. Both have gotten meaningfully better in the past twelve months. But they are not interchangeable, and choosing the wrong one will cost you either money or time (sometimes both). The real answer depends almost entirely on who is running the workflows and what kind of automation you’re building.

We’ll give you the pricing reality, the feature breakdown, the self-hosting option most articles skip, and a direct recommendation at the end.


What Changed in 2025 (and Why It Matters for 2026 Decisions)

Before comparing the platforms, you need to understand the changes both made in the second half of 2025. Most comparison articles you’ll find right now were written before these updates, which makes their pricing math wrong.

n8n: The August 2025 Overhaul

On August 7, 2025, n8n removed active workflow limits from all paid cloud plans. Every paid plan now includes unlimited workflows, unlimited steps, and unlimited users. The only limit that remains is executions per month.

This was a significant change. Previously, paid plans capped how many active workflows you could have running. That limit is gone.

Here’s how n8n cloud pricing sits today on annual billing:

Annual billing saves roughly 17 to 20 percent compared to month-to-month. There’s a 14-day free trial on cloud plans.

The billing model matters here: n8n charges per execution, not per step. One complete workflow run counts as one execution, regardless of how many nodes are inside it. A 40-step workflow costs the same execution credit as a 3-step workflow. This makes n8n’s pricing genuinely predictable once you know how often your workflows fire.

n8n also introduced a Business Plan for self-hosted deployments, targeting mid-sized companies (under 100 employees) that need enterprise security features like SSO, LDAP, and Git version control without a full enterprise contract. We’ll cover self-hosting properly in a later section.

Make.com: Two Updates, One Pricing Trap

Make.com made two changes in H2 2025.

August 27, 2025: Make.com renamed its billing unit from “operations” to “credits.” The conversion was 1:1 automatic. Nothing else changed in terms of pricing or plan structure. The word “operations” still appears in run history logs for tracking, but the billing dashboard now shows credits.

November 6, 2025: Make.com reduced the cost of extra/overage credits from 30 percent above the plan rate to 25 percent above it. They also unlocked AI provider choice for all paid plans. Previously, AI modules were locked to Make’s own AI provider. Now paid users can bring their own (OpenAI, Anthropic, etc.) for AI steps.

The entry price can look much lower than n8n’s on paper, and Make.com can win on cost of getting started. But the billing model creates a trap that most articles don’t explain clearly.

Make.com charges per credit, and one credit equals one module action: one step in one scenario. A workflow with 10 steps uses 10 credits per run. That’s fine for low-volume, low-step automations.

The trap is polling triggers. If you set a trigger to check for new data every minute (a common setup for near-real-time automation), that trigger alone consumes over 43,000 credits per month, before any of your actual workflow actions run. On the Core plan’s 10,000 credits, you’d blow through your allocation on the trigger alone before you’ve done a single thing.

For simple automations that run infrequently and involve few steps, Make.com’s pricing is genuinely lower. For anything running at high frequency or involving complex multi-step logic, n8n’s per-execution model is substantially more cost-effective.


Feature Breakdown: Where Each Platform Wins

n8n’s Strengths

AI agent capabilities: This is where n8n has pulled ahead most clearly. n8n offers a full AI Agent builder with LangChain integration, Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) systems with native vector store support, and MCP Server support that lets external AI systems call n8n workflows directly. In January 2025 (v1.74.0), n8n added Vector Stores as Tools, meaning agents can query vector databases directly during a workflow run. They also shipped an AI Workflow Builder in beta that generates workflow structures from plain-English descriptions.

Code inside workflows: n8n supports full JavaScript and Python directly inside nodes. If your automation logic requires custom data transformations, API calls with unusual auth patterns, or anything that a pre-built module can’t handle, you write the code. Make.com has no equivalent.

Multiple triggers per workflow: n8n lets you have more than one trigger in a single workflow. Make.com allows only one trigger per scenario.

Data handling: n8n handles complex nested JSON natively and includes built-in PDF extraction. For teams working with structured data from APIs or documents, this reduces the need for extra transformation steps.

Git version control: On Business and Enterprise plans, n8n supports Git-based version control for workflows. For teams treating automation infrastructure like code, this is a meaningful operational feature.

Integrations: n8n has 1,200+ native integrations. Smaller than Make.com’s library, but the HTTP Request node connects to any API without a dedicated integration, which compensates for most gaps.

Security and deployment flexibility: n8n is SOC 2 and GDPR compliant and is the only platform in this comparison that offers self-hosting with full infrastructure control. More on that below.


Make.com’s Strengths

Native integrations: Make.com has 2,000 to 3,000+ pre-built app integrations. If your team works primarily with mainstream SaaS tools (HubSpot, Salesforce, Shopify, Google Workspace, Slack, Notion), Make.com likely has a ready-made module with zero API configuration required. You click, authenticate, and connect.

Visual interface for non-technical users: Make.com’s drag-and-drop scenario builder is genuinely beginner-friendly. You don’t need to know what JSON is to build a functional workflow. The interface is colorful and visual, with clear representations of data flowing between steps.

Advanced logic without code: Make.com provides routers (conditional branching), iterators (processing multiple items in sequence), and data transformers (reformatting data between apps) as visual tools. A non-technical user can build sophisticated conditional logic without writing a line of code.

AI Agents (launched April 2025): Make.com shipped its own AI Agents feature in April 2025. Agents can receive plain-language instructions and determine execution steps dynamically, working across existing scenarios. The agents are less capable than n8n’s (no RAG support as of early 2026, and they can’t function outside workflows), but they’re functional for teams already embedded in the Make.com ecosystem who want to add AI without switching platforms.

Cloud-only simplicity: Make.com is entirely cloud-hosted. There’s no server setup, no Docker, no maintenance. For teams without DevOps capacity, this is the entire pitch. You sign up, you build, it runs.

Lower entry price: Make.com can come in lower at the entry tier than n8n Starter. If you’re running simple automations with moderate step counts and low polling frequency, Make.com’s cost advantage at the low end is real.


Self-Hosting: The Option Most Articles Skip

n8n’s Community Edition is free, open-source, and runs on any server you control. This changes the cost calculation completely.

We’ve run n8n on a low-cost VPS. At that price point, the Community Edition gives you unlimited workflows, unlimited executions, and full data sovereignty. There are no execution limits, no per-step costs, and no pricing changes that affect your bill.

The tradeoff is operational: you manage the server, handle updates, and take responsibility if something breaks. For developers comfortable with Linux and basic server administration, this is a minor ongoing task. For non-technical teams, it’s a real barrier.

The Community Edition does have limitations compared to paid cloud plans. It lacks SSO and LDAP, Git-based version control, and priority support. For solo builders or small technical teams, those omissions rarely matter. For mid-sized companies with compliance requirements, n8n’s self-hosted Business Plan adds those enterprise features at a custom price while keeping data on your own infrastructure.

Make.com has no self-hosting option. It is cloud-only. If you need on-premise deployment for regulatory reasons, or if you want the cost floor of running your own server, Make.com is off the table.


The Honest Recommendation (Based on Who You Are)

We’ve found that trying to pick a “winner” between these tools misses the point. They’re built for different people. Here’s how we’d direct each type of reader.

Go with n8n if:

You are a developer, DevOps engineer, or someone comfortable with JavaScript or Python. You want to build AI agent systems that use RAG, vector databases, or multi-LLM pipelines. You’re running high-volume workflows where per-execution pricing beats per-step. You need full data control for compliance reasons. Or you want to self-host and eliminate your cloud bill entirely.

The August 2025 pricing overhaul removed the main friction point (workflow limits), and n8n’s AI capabilities are the most advanced available without writing your own infrastructure from scratch.

Go with Make.com if:

You are a marketer, operations manager, sales coordinator, or small business owner with no engineering background. You need to connect mainstream SaaS tools without API configuration. You want to be building functional automations within hours of signing up, not days. And you’re running automations that fire infrequently enough that the per-credit billing doesn’t create a cost problem.

Make.com’s November 2025 update making custom AI providers available on all paid plans is a genuine improvement. For non-technical teams who want to add AI steps to their existing scenarios, that change removed a meaningful limitation.

Go with self-hosted n8n if:

You’re comfortable managing a Linux server, you want the lowest possible ongoing cost, and you don’t need enterprise features like SSO. A low-cost VPS running the Community Edition is the most cost-effective automation infrastructure we’ve found at any scale.


A Note on the Polling Credit Trap (Make.com)

We want to give this its own section because it’s the single most common mistake we’ve seen people make when switching to Make.com and then complaining about unexpected bills.

The free tier gives you 1,000 credits per month. The Core plan gives you 10,000. That sounds like plenty until you turn on a trigger that polls for new data every minute.

Here’s the math: 60 minutes per hour, 24 hours per day, 30 days per month. That’s 43,200 trigger checks per month. At 1 credit per check, you’ve consumed over four times the Core plan’s credit allocation on the trigger alone, before a single actual workflow action runs.

The fix is straightforward: use webhook triggers instead of polling triggers whenever your source app supports them. Webhooks fire only when something actually happens, so they consume zero credits while idle. For apps that don’t support webhooks, schedule your triggers at longer intervals (every 15 or 30 minutes instead of every minute) if near-real-time isn’t a hard requirement.

Make.com’s 15-minute polling interval on the free tier isn’t just a free-tier limitation. It’s also the interval that keeps credit consumption at a manageable level for most non-enterprise use cases.

This is not a reason to avoid Make.com. It is a reason to understand your trigger strategy before you commit to a plan.


What We Use

Our team runs n8n. We have technical capacity (agents who write code), we run multi-step AI pipelines that would be expensive on per-step billing, and we need the AI agent and vector store capabilities that n8n’s platform provides. We tested Make.com for specific low-complexity integrations and found the visual interface genuinely faster for those tasks.

If we were a small marketing team running automations between HubSpot, Slack, and Google Sheets, we’d be on Make.com. The integrations are better for that stack, the interface is faster to use without engineering support, and the pricing at low execution volumes is lower.

The decision isn’t ideological. It’s operational. Pick based on your team’s technical capacity and the complexity of what you’re building.


One More Thing Worth Knowing

Both platforms are actively investing in AI automation capabilities in 2026. n8n is further along technically, especially for agent systems. Make.com is catching up with its April 2025 AI Agents launch and will likely continue narrowing the gap. If you’re making a long-term platform decision, know that both roadmaps are pointed in the same direction; they’re just at different milestones.
