MCP Servers Explained: Connect Any Tool to Claude in 10 Minutes
MCP servers let Claude connect to your actual tools. Here is what they are, which ones are worth setting up, and what trips people up.

You have seen the demos. Someone asks Claude to check their Notion database, update a GitHub issue, and write a summary to Slack. All in one prompt. Claude just does it.
If you have tried to replicate that in Claude.ai and ended up staring at a chat box with no idea why it can’t see your files, you have run into the same wall we did. Claude, on its own, has no idea your tools exist. It can only work with what you paste into the chat.
The thing that changes that is called an MCP server. This article explains what it is, which ones are worth your time, and exactly what will trip you up during setup.
What Is an MCP Server?
MCP stands for Model Context Protocol. Anthropic introduced it on November 25, 2024 as an open standard for connecting AI models to external tools and data sources. Since then, OpenAI adopted it in March 2025 and Google DeepMind followed in April 2025. In December 2025, Anthropic donated the spec to the Agentic AI Foundation, a directed fund under the Linux Foundation.
The official description from modelcontextprotocol.io puts it well: “Think of MCP like a USB-C port for AI applications. Just as USB-C provides a standardized way to connect devices, MCP provides a standardized way to connect AI applications to external systems.”
That analogy holds up. Before USB-C, every device had its own proprietary cable. Before MCP, every AI integration was its own custom build. Now there is one standard that any compatible client can use.
In practical terms, an MCP setup has two pieces:
- The client: This is Claude Desktop (or another MCP-compatible app like Cursor, VS Code, or Replit). The client is the AI interface that initiates requests.
- The server: This is a small program running on your machine (or remotely) that exposes specific tools. A filesystem MCP server gives Claude the ability to read and write local files. A GitHub MCP server lets Claude interact with your repos. Each server does one job and does it through a documented interface.
You install the server, tell Claude Desktop where to find it, and Claude can now use it in any conversation.
MCP vs Function Calling: Why It Matters
If you have used Claude or ChatGPT through an API, you may have heard of function calling. OpenAI introduced it in June 2023. It lets you define tools in your API request and the model calls them during a conversation. So why do we need MCP?
The problem with function calling is what engineers call the N times M problem. If you have N AI models and M data sources, you end up building N times M custom integrations. Each one is tightly coupled to a specific model and a specific app. When you switch models, you rebuild. When you add a new tool, you update every integration that might need it.
Function calling also has no concept of a reusable server. Tool definitions live inside each API request, in a format that differs across providers. An Anthropic tool schema is not the same as an OpenAI tool schema. Nothing is portable.
MCP separates the concerns completely. An MCP server is a standalone process with a stable interface. Write it once and any MCP client can discover and use it: Claude Desktop today, VS Code Copilot tomorrow, whatever comes next. The transport layer uses JSON-RPC 2.0, and the protocol supports both synchronous requests and server-sent events for async workflows.
As Descope noted in their November 2025 analysis: “MCP transforms repetitive, custom integrations into reusable, composable infrastructure.” That is the real shift.
The 5 MCP Servers Worth Setting Up Right Now
Anthropic maintains official reference implementations on GitHub, and the community has built hundreds more. After looking at what is most widely used across r/ClaudeAI, the awesome-mcp-servers lists, and our own workflow, these five stand out.
1. Filesystem MCP
The official Anthropic reference server. It gives Claude read and write access to directories you specify. This is the foundation: once you have it running, Claude can read your notes, edit your drafts, and organize files without you copy-pasting anything. Start here before anything else.
Best for: Writers, solo operators with document-heavy workflows, anyone tired of pasting context into every chat.
2. GitHub MCP
Also an official Anthropic server. It connects Claude to your GitHub repos through the API, so you can ask Claude to open an issue, review a PR, search commits, or summarize what changed in the last week. We use this daily.
Best for: Developers, technical founders managing open-source projects, anyone doing code review.
3. Brave Search MCP
Gives Claude real-time web search through Brave’s API. This turns Claude into a research assistant that can actually verify information rather than hallucinate it. You need a Brave Search API key (there is a free tier).
Best for: Researchers, content teams, anyone who needs Claude to cite current sources.
4. Notion MCP
Connects Claude to your Notion workspace. You can ask Claude to read a specific page, write to a database, or summarize your meeting notes from last week. The official Notion integration is what we have tested most; there are community alternatives too.
Best for: Solopreneurs running their business in Notion, teams using Notion as a knowledge base.
5. Puppeteer MCP
Browser automation without writing code. Claude can navigate to URLs, click elements, fill forms, and scrape pages through Puppeteer. It is slower and less reliable than the others, but for one-off scraping tasks it saves real time.
Best for: Researchers, marketers, anyone who manually copies data from websites.

Honest Setup Walkthrough: What Actually Trips People Up
The official docs make this sound straightforward. In our experience, it is straightforward for developers and genuinely frustrating for everyone else. Here is the real picture.
What you need before you start:
- Claude Desktop installed (Mac or Windows; Linux support is community-maintained and spotty)
- Node.js installed, if you are setting up an npm-based server
- Python installed, if you are setting up a Python-based server
- A text editor that can open config files without mangling them
Most tutorials skip the Node.js and Python steps entirely and wonder why people get stuck. If you have never installed Node.js, go to nodejs.org and install the LTS version before anything else.
The setup process:

Find your Claude Desktop config file. On Mac, it lives at
~/Library/Application Support/Claude/in a file calledclaude_desktop_config. On Windows, it is in your AppData Roaming folder under Claude. -
Open that config file in a text editor. It is a JSON file. If it is empty, you will need to add the basic structure. If you have never edited JSON before, this is the part that causes the most problems: one missing comma or curly brace breaks the entire thing and Claude Desktop gives you no useful error message.

Add a config block for each server. A typical entry has the server name, the command to run it (usually
npxfor Node servers oruvxfor Python), and any arguments or environment variables it needs (like API keys). -
Completely quit Claude Desktop. Not just close the window: use Cmd+Q on Mac or right-click the taskbar icon and Exit on Windows. Then reopen it.

Look for the MCP server indicator in the Claude Desktop interface. There should be a small icon or indicator showing your servers are connected.
The friction points Scout found in Reddit threads:
- PATH issues on Windows. When Claude Desktop launches your MCP server, it uses its own PATH, which may not include the directory where Node.js or Python is installed. The fix is to use absolute paths in the config. The error messages are cryptic.
- JSON formatting errors. A single trailing comma or missing brace silently breaks things. Use a JSON validator before restarting Claude Desktop.
- Restart requirement. Changes do not take effect until you fully restart Claude Desktop. Many people make a config change, switch windows, and wonder why nothing changed.
- No GUI. As of early 2026, there is still no built-in interface for managing MCP servers. It is all manual config file editing.
The easier alternative: Docker released the MCP Toolkit in November 2025. It wraps popular MCP servers in containers with a more manageable setup process. If you are already using Docker, that is worth trying first.
Security: The Part Nobody Talks About
MCP is moving fast and the security model is still catching up. A few things you should know before you start running servers on your machine.
Hardcoded credentials are common. Astrix Security analyzed over 5,000 MCP servers in early 2026 and found that 53% use insecure hardcoded credentials. Before you install a community MCP server, read its source code or at least check whether it asks you to put API keys directly in the server code rather than in environment variables you control.
Prompt injection is a real attack surface. If a malicious MCP server returns crafted text in its tool responses, it can potentially redirect Claude to take actions you did not intend. This is not theoretical: security researchers published analysis of this attack class in April 2025. Stick to servers from sources you trust: the official Anthropic implementations, large established open-source projects with active maintainers, or servers you have read the code for yourself.
Filesystem access is broad by default. The Filesystem MCP server lets you specify which directories it can access. Be specific. Do not point it at your home directory. Red Hat’s security team documented a vulnerability in early 2026 (called EscapeRoute) showing that filesystem restrictions can be bypassed in certain configurations. Keep your allowed paths tight and update the server when new versions ship.
The short version: treat MCP servers the same way you treat browser extensions. You are running third-party code with elevated access to your tools. Be selective.
Our Verdict: What We Actually Use It For
We have been running MCP in our own setup since early 2025. The honest answer is that it changed how we use Claude for daily work, but the most useful applications are more mundane than the demos suggest.
The Filesystem server is running every day. We point it at our workspace directory and Claude can read research notes, update draft documents, and check what files exist without us having to paste anything. It sounds minor. In practice it saves 20 minutes on most writing days.
The GitHub server runs during active development work. Asking Claude to summarize open issues or draft a PR description is faster than context-switching to GitHub.
We tried the Puppeteer server for a few weeks. It works, but it is slower than expected and occasionally breaks when page layouts change. We use it for one-off scraping tasks, not anything regular.
The Notion server is useful specifically for retrieving information from long documents. Less useful for writing to Notion, because Claude’s output still needs editing before it belongs in a database.
One important caveat: all of this runs through Claude Desktop. If you are a Claude.ai web app user, MCP is not available there as of early 2026. Desktop only.
The Bigger Picture
MCP started as an Anthropic project, but it is not an Anthropic-only standard anymore. VS Code Copilot, Cursor, Replit, and ChatGPT all support it. The Linux Foundation now governs the spec. Whatever AI tools you use in 2027, there is a reasonable chance they will speak MCP.
That means the time you put into understanding and setting up MCP servers now compounds. An MCP server you build or configure today works with any future client that adopts the standard. That is the part that justifies the initial friction.
